Barnacus
From the pen of Sor, Archonal scribe 997 H.E., dictated by High Lord
Protector Dwalin Ironheart of Northmarch.
This story I tell you was passed down in my
family, by my aunt Dorthea, who was present during these proceedings.
In 904 H.E.(Hadran Empire time line) the village of Daryth was a
bustling village containing five hundred residents, ruled by the Elven warrior Barnacus
Acoma. Barnacus was a man with an unusual position on life. He believed that every man
possessed value, and that each should give some of himself to better the community.
Barnacus was the first to resume the ancient title of High Lord Protector, one he most
certainly earned. The ancient Guild of Healers was renewed with the restoration of a
permanent Earth Circle, the first seen since the Sphere Wars. Thus Daryth prospered.
Only a short distance away lie the secret caves of the Dripping Blade
tribe of orcs, led by U'lag Ulmunus, a great Earth Templar and sworn enemy of Lord
Barnacus Acoma. It was the dawn of the third age of magic, and all casters were still
becoming accustomed to the changes brought about. U'lag found that many of the tribal
formal scrolls had undergone a transformation, and he concocted an idea. He devoted many
of the tribal resources to creating a symbol that would crush the humans and elves that
lived in Daryth, and most importantly Lord Barnacus. Many months passed, and U'lag
gathered components and conducted experiments, until his labors bore an evil fruit. Alkarg
was forged. It was a great spear, rumored to give the wielder protection, while causing
great destruction to the Elven people. U'lag gathered his tribe, recruited many other
humanoids from the area and waged war on Daryth, with the intent on using Alkarg on his
enemy, Lord Barnacus.
The first of the Orc Wars was by far the bloodiest. The Healer's Guild was infiltrated
with most of the healers slaughtered and much of the guild's wealth plundered.
Luckily, Lord Barnacus had some of the healers spread throughout the village, so all was
not lost. Hundreds of people died defending the village from what seemed like thousands of
monsters. It looked like the village would be overrun, so Lord Barnacus had to come up
with a plan to end the war once and for all. He took only one companion, and they secretly
entered the orcish caverns looking for U'lag's cave. Miraculously, they arrived undetected
to find U'lag within a permanent Earth Circle! Lord Barnacus waited until the circle was
lowered (for circles were still raised and lowered at that time), then attacked. He
dropped U'lag swiftly, for he had no bodyguards so deep within his own defenses. Then Lord
Barnacus' companion, the Biata healer Lyanna, began to perform an Obliteration on U'lag,
using his own circle against him. Lord Barnacus held off legions of orcs so Lyanna could
complete her ritual, and complete it successfully she did. Lyanna then plundered U'lag's
possessions, including Alkarg, and performed a Spirit Walk ritual to get back to her
circle in Daryth.
Only then did she reveal Lord Barnacus' plan. They left the Healer's
Guild open to attack so U'lag would steal Lyanna's Permanence scroll and build his own
circle, thus giving Lyanna the opportunity to Spirit Walk away with Alkarg. Then they
secretly infiltrated the orc lair to obliterate U'lag and steal Alkarg, breaking the moral
of the orcish hordes. Barnacus sacrificed himself to allow Lyanna the time she needed to
cast her rituals, knowing only the caster can Spirit Walk. Unfortunately, when Lyanna
resurrected Lord Barnacus, his spirit refused to re-enter his body and he died his
permanent death. His son Amric took up his cause and furthered the good his father began.
All of the villagers realized the sacrifice Lord Barnacus made, and wanted to honor him as
much as he honored them, so they changed the name of their village to Barnacus. In time
the village became a town, and the town became a city, for many people moved to Barnacus
because of the great sacrifices its' nobility endured for its' people.
